Understanding IPAF Course Categories

The Importance of Trusted Training Providers

Working at height can be a challenging and hazardous task, especially when using access equipment such as aerial lifts and platforms. To ensure that operators are using these machines safely and efficiently, the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) established a comprehensive training program.

Here’s everything you need to know about the course and its categories, and why it’s important to work with a provider of IPAF training London that construction professionals trust.

What is IPAF?

IPAF is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to promoting the safe and effective use of powered access equipment worldwide. Founded in 1983, IPAF has played a pivotal role in setting industry standards. As part of its work, it provides safety guidelines and delivers certified training to construction industry professionals in London and across the UK.

The IPAF Courses

IPAF offers a range of training courses tailored to the specific needs of different industries and job roles. These course categories are designed to familiarise participants with the equipment they will be operating, along with best practices for safe operation and the regulations governing the use of powered access equipment. If you complete your training with Harrington Safety, you will be able to take one of the four following courses:

Category 1a – Static Vertical

This course is designed for those who will be operating vertical personnel platforms that remain static during use – more commonly known as static scissor lifts. Attendees will learn how to manoeuvre these machines safely and efficiently, positioning them accurately to carry out a range of tasks at height.

Category 1b – Static Boom

The Category 1b course focuses on the operation of static boom platforms, which you may know better as static cherry pickers. Participating in this course will help you to gain the skills needed to control and position the boom lift effectively, enabling you to work comfortably and securely at height.

Category 3a – Mobile Vertical (Scissor lift)

This IPAF category centres around mobile vertical platforms or mobile scissor lifts. These platforms offer versatility and mobility, and are used for a huge array of indoor and outdoor tasks. Participants will learn how to handle these machines safely, learning how to consider factors such as terrain and overhead obstacles.

Category 3b – Mobile Boom (Cherry Picker)

This final course addresses the operation of mobile boom platforms or cherry pickers. This course equips delegates with the knowledge and skills to control the movement and positioning of the cherry picker effectively. They will also learn to identify and manage potential hazards associated with operating these machines.
